Child Safety at Nexus

What is a child safe organisation?

The Victorian Government introduced a set of guidelines called the ‘Child Safe Standards’. These guidelines are for all organisations that provide services to children and young people. The guidelines make sure that children are protected from harm and abuse, and make sure that the organisations have policies and procedures in place to make sure children are protected.

We are committed to these standards.

How are we a child safe organization?

We are committed to protecting children and young people. We will make sure that we keep the highest standard of child safety in our practice, polices, procedures and recruitment. We will act in the best interest of all children at all times according to the UN Rights of the Child. This includes:

• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children

• Children with disabilities

• Children of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds

• Children of diverse gender and sexual orientation.

We ask staff to commit to protecting the rights and safety of children by asking all staff to sign a Code of Conduct. This Code of Conduct includes a statement of child safety. The statement says that at Nexus Primary Health, we:

• Uphold the rights of all children to feel safe and protected

• Have a zero tolerance for child abuse.

• Take any reports of child abuse from children seriously.

• Ensure that children are as safe as possible when they report abuse

• Report any allegation of child abuse to the Police, Child Protection, the manager and the Chief Executive.

• Ensure that children have a say and participate in the organization.

• Ensure that all staff are appropriate and professional with children at all times.

All Nexus employees, contractors, volunteers and the Board Directors have:

• A current Working with Children’s Check

• A National Police Check

We have policies in place to make sure that everyone has a good understanding of what a child safe organisation is.
